#FieldTripFriday: This week, with a little help from a few friends, we visited the 1st annual Knight at the Museum at Reading Intermediate High School. The event highlighted the school’s project-based learning initiative, and it allowed students to showcase their skills, knowledge and interests in various subjects. Each floor of RIHS was transformed into a museum space. Projects and displays included: world culture, pop culture, science, literature, short stories, computer age, communications, celebrity profiles, the history of Reading, simple machines and smoke signals, among others. There was also a children’s museum, art museum, wax museum, poetry lounge and a labyrinth. Cool stuff! Take a look!#RSDproud

#FieldTripFriday: This week, we visited Northeast Middle School and spent time looking at the Wall of Fame. It's an entire hallway outside of the main office, and it's filled with photos of successful alumni, recipients of the Distinguished Northeaster Award and school memorabilia. Take a look! #RSDproud
#FieldTripFriday: This week, we visited cyberspace. From hashtags to blog posts, Reading School District is active on seven social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn and Weebly. It’s one of the best ways to engage students, staff, parents, alumni and the Greater Reading community. Dr. Mumin is one of the few Berks County superintendents to have a Twitter account, and thanks to all of you, the district won a national award last year for its Facebook page. Plus, our amazing Class President Elise Jackson oversees a Red Knight Pride Instagram account that showcases the positives happening at RHS. We are also in the process of revamping and updating all of our websites, including the district website and individual websites for each of our 19 schools. We’ve even added new pop-up alerts on our websites to share important news and information. (Visit www.ReadingSD.org right now, and you’ll see our first pop-up alert!) #RSDproud
#FieldTripFriday: This week, we visited the Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harriburg with students from the Knight Vision (formerly Community Knights) club at Reading High School. It was a cool experience for a bunch of city slickers. We saw butter, bees and butterflies, plus animals, tractors and science fair projects. And, yes, the farm show milkshakes were amazing! #RSDproud
#FieldTripFriday: This week, we visited "Fun Friday" in Mr. Chappelear's 1st grade classroom at 10th and Green Elementary. During the 30-minute Fun Friday session, students work at interactive stations, where they learn through play. Stations include Play-Doh, LEGOs, K'NEX, building blocks, dancing to videos on the smart board, drawing and computers. There's also a table to catch up on missed work and a teaching station, where students teach lessons to their classmates. (We learned math problems today ... 1,000 + 1,000 = 2,000!) Many teachers throughout the district hold similar activities, and the kids love it! Take a look! Plus: You can follow Mr. Chappelear on Twitter: https://twitter.com/freshinfirst #RSDproud
#FieldTripFriday: Do you wanna build a snowman? This week, we visited a painting party at Tyson Schoener Elementary School with special education teacher Lisa Richter, who also owns LaRe Creations Painting Parties. Mrs. Richter held a holiday food drive for the Greater Berks Food Bank, and Mrs. Evans’ class at Tyson collected the most items. For all of their efforts, the students were treated to a fun painting party in the cafeteria this afternoon. Take a look at their cool snowmen! #RSDproud
#FieldTripFriday: This week, we visited Reading High School and checked out the amazing hallway murals. This is only a sampling of the beautiful artwork at RHS, but each piece is a reminder of our talented art students, past and present. You can feel the Red Knight pride bursting through each painting. Take a look! #RSDproud
#FieldTripFriday: This week, we visited the Holiday Shop at Amanda Stout Elementary. Mrs. Heydt and the students in her Intermediate Life Skills class have worked very hard to select items, set up the store, put price stickers on items, arrange displays and help their fellow students find the perfect gifts. Even Dr. Mumin shopped 'til he dropped and bought a new set of oven mitts today. Take a look! #RSDproud
This week, we visited the Just For Red Knights School Store, which has been updated and revamped this school year. The store had been dormant, following the passing of longtime teacher Dave Hertzog, who had overseen the store for years.
The store is now run by the new Just For Red Knights Club, along with club advisers Corinne McElroy and Nick Giacche. The store is open after school Monday-Friday. Alumni, parents and community members who are interested in buying school spirit items can e-mail Corinne McElroy at [email protected] to place orders. We all know field trips make school fun! So, we came up with something new -- Field Trip Fridays!
We're going to take field trips throughout Reading School District l Reading, Pa., to give you an inside look at the people, places and things that make RSD so great! We'll post a new field trip each week. For our 1st Field Trip Friday, we visited Angel Zimmerman, assistant principal at Northwest Middle School. Her office walls are covered with #RSDproud moments, photos of students, newspaper clippings, student letters and motivational quotes. Her office is a reflection of her positive attitude and passion for education. Take a look! |
